About Me
hi, i’m terry shoemaker, and i draw comic books. i’ve worked for marvel, dc, image/wildstorm, and i’ve drawn over hundreds of different characters. welcome to my website.
my journey started when i was just a boy
Terry’s inspiration for drawing at an early age comes mainly from his brother, Greg. Greg would challenge Terry to see if they could draw just as good if not better than the comic book artists of their time. This tradition would continue into their formative years as Terry and Greg would draw competitively while collecting comic books.
golden gladiator
In 1980, Terry created Golden Gladiator. It was his first creation and published comic character. It was written and drawn for the Newfoundland Times-Herald in Canada.
“how to throw a grenade”
In 1981, Terry worked a 9-to-5 in an office. He drew military manuals. Terry even illustrated such things as how to change a tire on a Blackhawk helicopter and how to throw a grenade the proper way.
dc’s new talent showcase #7
In 1982, Terry met world renonwned Dick Giordano at an early iteration of the San Diego Comic Convention. Karen Berger contacted Terry and he was immediately featured in
DC’s New Talent Showcase # 7.
Keith Giffin also spent time with Terry and their bond led to Keith recommending Terry to become one of the main artists for Tales of the Legion of Superheroes. Terry has penciled many Keith Giffin’s layouts for Legion so much so that you will find a lot of work referencing Legion in many of Terry’s art pieces.
marvel comics
In 1984, Carl Potts recruited Terry to work for Marvel Comics. Terry visited Marvel Studios in New York where he met Walt and Louise Simonson, Bob Harras, and Bobbie Chase. From that point on, Terry worked for Marvel as a penciller, inker and cover artist.
Most of Terry’s comic book career was spent with Marvel. Alien Legion, X-Factor, Spellbound, Excalibur, Cloak and Dagger, Marvel Fanfare and X-Force are just some of the many titles Terry has illustrated and given his artistry. Terry would also go on to work on the revamped Iron Man comics in the late 90s.
jim lee’s new startup
In 1995, Jim Lee hired Terry to work at Image, which would later become Wildstorm that would integrate into the DC Universe in La Jolla, California.
During his time at Image/Wildstorm, Terry would take on the role as penciller, inker, and cover artist on titles such as Gen13, The Maxx, Stormwatch, and Zealot.
